The BIOTIA-ID Urine Test Bundle provides three (3) at-home urine collection kits for patients with recurrent, complicated, or culture-negative UTIs and current symptoms. Many people who experience a UTI will go on to experience a recurrence of their symptoms within six months to a year following their first infection. This allows people who frequently get UTIs to test promptly in the case that symptoms return or flare, while saving money on repeat testing.

Biotia does not currently accept insurance for this test or the telemedicine support. This test is HSA/FSA eligible.

The BIOTIA-ID Urine Test is a regulated diagnostic test that requires a prescription by a licensed healthcare provider. Pre-check your eligibility below. Our telehealth partners will confirm your eligibility after account creation on the Biotia Portal.
1. Recurrent UTI

Patients who frequently get UTIs or have persistent UTI symptoms are a good fit for this diagnostic test.

A UTI is considered recurrent if you have had 2 or more in the past 6 months, or 3 or more in the past 12 months, including your current UTI symptoms.

2. Complicated UTI

Pre-existing conditions and other factors may increase your risk of complications from UTIs. Some of these include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Male anatomy
  • Catheterization
  • History of urological surgery
  • Immunocompromised status

There are a number of conditions that may make you qualified for this test. To know for certain, purchase the test and complete your eligibility form on the Biotia Portal.

If you are not eligible, the hold on your card will be released and you will not be charged.
3. Culture-negative UTI

Urine culture is considered the standard of care to diagnose UTIs, however, it can miss as many as 1 in 3 cases (false negatives). If you have recently been tested via urine culture or another method and are still experiencing UTI symptoms, this test may be right for you.

The BIOTIA-ID Urine Test has undergone rigorous analytical and clinical validation on real patient specimens and has received approval for use across all 50 U.S. states.

Some highlights include:

  • 97% sensitivity and 99% specificity
  • Among patients with negative urine cultures, our test found UTI-causing pathogens in 63% of specimens (n=200). In 70% of these cases, the prescribed antibiotic would have no effect on the pathogen
  • Our test is particularly strong at identifying anaerobic and slow-growing pathogens as well as instances of polymicrobial infection (>3 pathogens)

What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system. The urinary system includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra.

UTIs don't always cause symptoms. When they do, they may include:

  • A strong urge to urinate that doesn't go away
  • A burning feeling when urinating
  • Urinating often, and passing small amounts of urine
  • Urine that looks cloudy
  • Urine that appears red, bright pink or cola-colored — signs of blood in the urine
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain, particularly in women
What pathogens cause UTIs?

A large number of pathogens can cause urinary tract infections. These include different kinds of bacteria and fungi.
Who is at risk for UTIs?

Some people are at higher risk for UTIs, such as people with female anatomy. Additionally, certain behaviors and activities can increase a person’s risk of getting a UTI.

These include:

  • Previous urinary tract infection
  • Old age
  • Co-morbidities such as chronic kidney disease, cancer, and immunocompromising conditions

Risk factors specific to people with female anatomy include:

  • Shorter urethra as a result of female anatomy
  • Sexual activity
  • Certain types of birth control, such as diaphragms or spermicides
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal changes as a result of menopause
What makes the BIOTIA-ID Urine Test different from other tests?

Most UTIs are diagnosed through urine culture, and in some instances, through a technique called polymerase-chain reaction (PCR). Both of these types of tests have limitations – oftentimes known UTI-causing pathogens are missed. Our test overcomes this limitation by looking at all of the pathogen DNA in your urine sample through next-generation sequencing and machine learning.

Additionally, rather than simply generating a report for your use, patients can receive follow-up care with licensed clinicians trained in UTI management. Our partner clinicians can handle the most challenging of cases.
Can I trust the results of this test?

We clinically validated this test in a CLIA-certified diagnostic laboratory using real patient specimens. We continue to participate in strict regulatory oversight for laboratory-developed tests across all 50 U.S. states. We have demonstrated a sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 99% for 44 known UTI pathogens and can detect 14 resistance marker genes for 6 different antibiotic resistance classes. This helps your provider accurately identify the pathogen(s) causing your UTI and choose an appropriate treatment option.
How long does it take for the test kit to ship?

You will receive your test kit within 1-2 days following eligibility confirmation by our partner telehealth provider. Please note that orders placed on Fridays may not be shipped out until the following Monday.

Your test kit includes a prepaid return label that ships your sample overnight directly to the Biotia Laboratory. To avoid weekend delays, we recommend that patients ship their samples Monday through Thursday. Holidays may impact return shipping. Check our website for notices of holiday closure.

Patients should ship their sample on the same day it is collected. Due to New York State regulations, samples that arrive more than 48 hours after collection cannot be accepted.
How long does it take to get results?

Our current days of operation are Monday-Friday. On average, results are reported within 3 business days following receipt of your sample by the Biotia Laboratory. Holidays may delay results.

You will receive notifications when your sample is received by our laboratory and when your results are ready for review.
What will the test results tell me?

Your results will indicate whether any of the 44 pathogens tested with BIOTIA-ID Urine were detected in your sample. If a pathogen is present and carries antibiotic resistance genes, you will receive a report that includes this information. Your clinician will review the findings and determine the most appropriate course of treatment based on the specific pathogens and any resistance genes identified.
Can I discuss my results with my own doctor?

Yes, you can discuss your test results with your own provider. We provide both our patients and our telehealth partner with a report containing your test results. You can access this report through the Biotia Patient Portal, which will allow you to download a PDF copy that you may bring to your own provider.
Where is this test available?

This test is the first-of-its-kind to receive approval as a laboratory-developed test across all 50 U.S. states. This means our test has met strict performance requirements that many wellness brands who purport to successfully diagnose you have not.
Is this test covered by insurance? What insurance does Biotia accept?

Biotia does not currently accept any insurance for the at-home collection of this test. The BIOTIA-ID Urine Test uses the latest technology in diagnostics and is the first-of-its-kind to be used on urine samples. Biotia is working with insurance companies to obtain coverage for this test.

This test is HSA/FSA eligible. Patients may choose to pay in installments during checkout.
Is prescription treatment included in the price of the BIOTIA-ID Urine Test?

No, the cost of prescription treatment is not included in the price of the BIOTIA-ID Urine Test. Should your provider determine you need a prescription to treat your UTI, they will send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy. You will be responsible for any costs incurred in obtaining the prescription.
Is this test available outside of the United States?

The BIOTIA-ID Urine Test, including the telehealth services provided, is currently available for United States residents only. If you are an international patient, please reach out to customersupport@biotia.io to see how we might be able to help.
What are the age restrictions for ordering a BIOTIA-ID Urine Test?

At-home collection for the BIOTIA-ID Urine Test is available for patients age 5 and above. Patients who are under the age of 18 are unable to place an order for this test without a parent or guardian. Please contact us at customersupport@biotia.io to discuss testing for patients under the age of 18.

FAQs: The BIOTIA-ID Urine Test Bundle

Why might I need multiple diagnostic tests? Shouldn't it work on the first try?

While the BIOTIA-ID Urine Test is highly sensitive, urine as a specimen type can greatly vary in terms of the amount of pathogen that is present in a sample. This is influenced by factors such as hydration status, the time at which you last urinated, previous or current antibiotic use, as well as the type of pathogen that could be causing your symptoms, among other factors.

Our telehealth partners, clinical advisors, and patients have advocated for the option to have multiple test kits on hand, to allow patients to quickly test in the case that symptoms return, worsen, or are actively flaring.
When should I test again?

You should get tested when you experience symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) or during an active flare of your symptoms. Testing during an active episode helps identify the infection’s cause and guide the most effective treatment.
How does shipping work for the bundle?

All three (3) at-home test kits will be shipped together to your address once you complete your account on the Biotia Portal and are deemed eligible. Within each kit is a prepaid, overnight return shipping label to send your urine sample back to the Biotia Laboratory for testing.

I have already created my patient account and completed my patient intake/eligibility. Do I need to do this for each test?

Creating your patient account and completing the patient intake/eligibility is only required for your first test.

In order to activate your additional tests, you will login to the Biotia Portal, view "Your tests," and click "Activate" on the next unused test. Following this, you will be prompted to complete a brief symptom questionnaire. This creates a new test order for you and alerts our laboratory and telehealth partners that you will be sending in another sample.

Please do not send in a sample without completing the questionnaire as we will be unable to test it until you do so.
How long are the tests good for? Do they expire?

One of the components in the kit does expire after 12 months. Please check the expiration date on your kit prior to collecting your sample. If one of your test kits expires, please reach out to customersupport@biotia.io to get a replacement kit.
